Having an operation is never pleasant, but it is something most of us have to endure at some point in life. I don't really mind the actual operation, hospital time, and all the bits that go along with it. In fact, sometimes it can be some good forced downtime you might need.
What irks me the most, is the timing. it never comes when it's convenient, Then again, when would it ever be convenient?
For me it's inevitable I am going to upset someone. There's pretty much never a time when someone isn't in a hurry for equipment, or for a show that's coming. Trying to minimise unhappy clients is always on my mind, trying to fit it all in prior, or struggling after to get at least something done, is decisions I'm always thinking about.
This particular time, oh and I should mention this was my third surgery (plus Covid) in 2024, I did postpone surgery for 2 weeks just to get a little more done and out of the way. The Xmas rush was a big factor, making sure Xmas presents were there for the day. I'm glad I did choose that option, as recovery is slow and nothing has been done post surgery, yet...
This time I also posted more updates, let people know via email etc... I think that really helped. I'm definitely known for not giving updates often enough, I do spend so much time at the welding bench I often forget there is another whole side of the business to maintain. So I'm really hoping this becomes more of a habit I get into, more updates, speaking to clients more often and generally just keeping on top of it.
Anyway, on to the topic. I'm getting really freaking sick of not being able to walk!
Why? well in short I'm getting old. I've always had flat feet, pretty much no arch at all, worn orthotics ever since I was a little whipper snapper... When you get old, you can develop Adult Flatfoot Disease, which means the arch drops so far, the tendon just rips off the bone. Only fix, full foot reconstruction.
My advice to anyone with flat feet, keep your orthotics up to date!!! Please!
If you are squeamish, you may want to skip the next paragraph, I'll explain what they did.
I had my heel cut off and moved further under my foot, then screwed into place. The outer side of my foot was cut, bent around like a banana, then a wedge put it to hold it there. And lastly I was one of the few lucky people to be born with a extra bone in my foot (feet) that isn't attached to anything, so they screwed that to the nearest bone. This all creates a nice little arch under my foot where it should be. Hopefully now no more orthotics, and no more pain.
The biggest downside, my left foot is a size 11, right foot is now size 9... :( Although my left foot is almost as bad as the the right one was, so this same surgery might be on the cards for this year too, get them evened up!
I still can't put any weight on my foot until it fully heals. In then a few weeks the Dr will look at my xrays and give me the all clear to start walking again, albeit, still wearing a boot. Luckily I can drive soon, so fingers crossed I get out on the road soo
n delivering all the goodies.
Till next time, stay shiny! Scott...
